Form 1099 Reporting Requirements

If it is determined that a service provider is an independent contractor, you then need to determine if they are required to receive a 1099 for the year. This determination is made every year as circumstances change each year. Most businesses use Forms 1099-INT, 1099-MISC, or 1099-NEC. If you paid them interest of $10 or more for the year, they will need to receive a Form 1099-INT. If you paid them $2000 or more for the year 2026, they will need to receive a Form 1099-MISC or 1099-NEC. The threshold amount for Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC will be indexed for inflation each year based on provisions set forth in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act that passed July 4, 2025. However, threshold amount alone is not the only qualifying factor to determine if a vendor is to receive Form 1099. This flow chart provides additional qualifying factors.
